Nomination Approved: R.L. Sturgis House
Starting way back in 2020, I had the pleasure of writing a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination for the R.L. Sturgis house in Rock Hill, SC. This beautiful old house is truly a sight to behold, and learning about its history and past occupants was a great experience.
After the nomination was written and submitted, I gave a verbal defense of the nomination before the State Review Board, and then we waited. See our case study on the R.L. Sturgis House nomination here for more details.
The work for this nomination took over a year, not including the additional waiting period, but in January of 2022 I was notified that the nomination had been approved! The homeowners were overjoyed, as they had long-dreamed of having this distinction for their property.
The R.L. Sturgis House is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and the listing can be viewed here: https://schpr.sc.gov/index.php/Detail/properties/74014. There is also a link to download the full nomination file with lots of information on the house.
The homeowners plan to proudly display the commemorative NRHP plaque outside of their home, and they are building a website with the definitive history of the R.L. Sturgis House. When the project was completed, I shared a Dropbox archive of the digital research materials for the project, and the homeowners are making great use of it in building the site.
I’m thrilled to have been part of this successful nomination, and congratulate the homeowners on their listing to the National Register of Historic Places!
